Setting the work language for the help system

This section explains how to set a work language for the help system. The work language is the language in which the help system appears when you (1) press F1, (2) click Help | Contents, or (3) use the context-sensitive functionality. Because you may find yourself in a situation in which you use the help system in a language that is different from the language in which you use EngView, you can set your own work language for the help system.

Three languages for the help system

An important thing to know is that you can install EngView in multiple languages but for the help system you can choose between three — English, German and Japanese. This means that if during setup you choose to install in one of these three languages (in Setup's Default Language and Measurement Units step), the setup program installs also the help system in this same language, which becomes the help system's default language. If during setup you choose to install in a language other than English, German or Japanese, Setup sets English as the default language for the help system.

The help system's default language

The default language is the language the help system uses when:

• You are working offline.
• You are working online but have not set an alternative language for the help system to use.

In both cases, the default language is the help system's work language.

Options for the work language

For the work language, you can use:

• The help system default language.
• An alternative help system language. This is a language other than the default one. Once set, this language overrides the default one when you are working online. If you go offline, the help system loads in the default language automatically. You can set English, German or Japanese as alternative languages.

Examples

Consider two examples of how the default and alternative languages function as work languages:

• You have installed EngView in a language for which no help exists, which means that you have installed English as the help system's default language. If you feel more comfortable using the help system in German rather than in English, you can set German as your alternative language. It thus becomes your work language when you are working online; once you go offline, the help system will load in English, which is the default language.
• You have installed EngView in German, which means that you will be using German as your help system's default language. But if you feel more comfortable using the help system in English rather than in German, you can set English as an alternative language. It thus becomes your work language when you are working online; once you go offline, the help system will load in German, which is the default language.

Viewing the help system in English, German or Japanese

Regardless of what languages you use as default and work, you can always access all EngView's available help systems — in English, German and Japanese: On the Start menu, go to the EngView Systems category, and then click the link for the help system you need. (Marked by a yellow question mark on the backdrop of the program logo.) Note that the alternative languages will load only if you are online.

To set an alternative language as help system's work language

1. On the Start menu, in the EngView Package Designer category, start the System Configuration Utility.

2. Click the EVPDD [Version](x64) tab.
3. Copy the help system link as follows:

4. Paste the link into the Value column of the Application Help file box (selected).

5. Click OK. Your online help system is now active. When you are online, it will load when you press F1 or use the context-sensitive help functionality.
