Material surface appearance
About surfaces
A surface appearance
is the characteristic that describes a surface's visual properties. Along
with the producer- and production-related characteristics, the surface
appearance is a component in the definition of a material.
In EngView, surface
appearances can be:
- Front or rear. These are the surfaces of a board.
- Regular-structure edge. This is the appearance,
seen from the lateral edge, of a material whose structure is parallel
to the material's back and the rear sides. Applies for folding carton
cardboard and corrugated cardboard.
- Inverted Corrugated Board (ICB) edge. This is
the appearance, seen from the lateral edge, of a material whose structure
is vertical to the material's back and the rear sides. Applies for
inverted corrugated board.
Surface colors and visualization
Surface appearance are
determined by their color and their reaction to light.
Color/texture
In terms of color, surfaces
can appear in:
- Plain color.
- Plain color with a text pattern across the surface.
- Plain color with an image tiled across the surface.
Light
In terms of how it reacts
to light, a surface is determined by its:
- Emission. This is the color and the intensity
with which the material emits light on its own.
- Diffusion. This is the color and the intensity
with which the material diffuses direct light.
- Specularity. This is the color of the reflected
light and the glossiness of the surface.
- Ambience. This is the color and the amount of
ambient light.
- Reflectivity. This is the amount of light that
the surface reflects.
- Opacity. This is the quantity of light that is
transmitted through the surface.
