Designing counterplate

What is counterplate

Counterplate is a piece of solid material in which channels are cut that match the creasing rules in the piece of packaging. The counterplate is placed against the cutting die, so that the sheet lies between the cutting die and the counterplate. After the die has punched the sheet, the edges formed along the creasing lines in the sheet material. This guarantees that the packaging will endure multiple folding in various environments over a long period.

In Prinect, the design of a counterplate is technologically linked with the design of the cutting die. The connection between the design of the die and the counterplate takes place in the initial 1up design. In it, special indicators (markers) are placed which ensure the correct positioning of the counterplate against the cutting die.

Because of the high quality of the resultant creasing, the use of counterplates guarantees that the cut packaging will meet superior design requirements.

Counterplate design user interface

The user interface tools that assist the creation and editing of counterplates are grouped in the Counterplate tab.

In a counterplate drawing, the following buttons are available for editing on the Counterplate tab.

New Counterplate Drawing Opens the Counterplate Generation Options dialog box, in which you can edit the settings for counterplate generation.

Smooth Corners Invokes a dialog box in which you can make additional settings — fillet radius and angle — for the rounding of corners.

Generate 160° Toolpath Invokes a dialog box in which you can set the offset for the 160-degree filleting tool.

Show Parent Drawing Displays the 1up drawing from which you created the current counterplate.

Show 120° Toolpath Displays the counterplate contour cut with a 120-degree tool.

Show 160° Toolpath Displays the path of the tool that makes the 160-degree filleting.

Specifying options

You can select the objects that you want the program to process as creasing grooves. You do this by specifying these objects' styles.
